Once Upon a Time There Was a Shabby Little Tree...

Soooo my favorite tree of all... is this little beat up, raggedy, faded white christmas tree .  I have had it for years
The base is gone, and all of the branches are twisted...

But when i add a few twinkle lights and some pretty ornaments it looks like the prettiest little magic fairy tree ever...

before i decorated it, i pulled out a bunch of ornaments and stuff... and laid them around, and i had some ribbon i was going to tie on it  -
but in the meantime, i stuffed the unwound ribbon into the base of the tree for safekeeping

... and when i looked back at it... i loved the way the ribbon looked all pooled and drippy and loose, so i decided to leave it just the way it was...
in fact if i'd had more ribbon i would have done it all around the bottom of the tree...

of course the cord is showing in the photos...

I would show you the tree lit up, but in photos it just looks like a glowing light blob -
i have no idea how to take photos of lit up Christmas trees...
i wish i did because they are so pretty

...And below is this years front door wreath...

It's a grapevine wreath that's another thrift shop find
and I change it about 3 times a year for the different seasons

I had this crazy vine with silver balls on it in my closet upstairs that drove me nuts ,because it was just always in the way, and getting tangled up in things, and i almost got rid of it a hundred times
but i decided to wind it around my wreath to see how it looked
and i think it's kind of fun!

(this just reinforces never getting rid of stuff...not good!)

Want to hear a very short Thanksgiving story...?

My sister dosen't really enjoy her mother in law - let's just be nice and say it is a bad personality match - but let me say this - my sister is really nice to everyone sooooo ... you figure it out

anyway... she was having her over for Thanksgiving with the family, because it is the nice thing to do of course...

As the mother in law arrives - In my sister's words:

"So as soon as she walked in the door,  I grabbed a bottle of wine and started drinking " -
finally the table was set and the candles were lit
and after a while we sat down to the beautiful Thanksgiving dinner,
I was the one who was supposed  to say the blessing ...
and i had been drinking wine ...
anyway i started to say the usual blessing we have said a thousand times,,  and rattled off  the first sentence... and it sounded kindof mushy
like - let ush give thanks... uhhh
and couldn't remember the rest!!
it's that moment when you realize you're totally buzzed and you've slurred your sentence, and sound like a drunk
so when i realized i had forgotten the blessing,  I said
 it just came out!
and then the kids started laughing at me, because they thought it was funny, and then their dad fussed at them for laughing... so i asked the mother in law to say it - and of course
she said THE PERFECT blessing"

anyway... I know it's a silly little story
but i thought it was  funny
if i'd been there i would have fallen out of my chair i'd be laughing so hard

now i could be wrong...
but from my knowledge of Thanksgiving prayers past
the "S" word is not generally supposed to be part of the blessing as a rule
we all do the best we can, don't we...

just a few more ...

a Merry Christmas sign from

a few birch logs in an old Homer Laughlin platter

and some pink and white gingham fabric torn up and made into a  shabby little bow...

I'm sure i'll be adding touches here and there through the month

no telling what other things will end up on the tree

or what other prayers will be said in a less than perfect way

but that's all for now...

...the end...

  1. Cindy, have I missed that gorgeous pink front door? fabulous, love all your pastel touches of Christmas. I'd have laughed too, who needs to be uptight at Thanksgiving, (or anytime)? xoxo

  2. Hi Cindy,
I'm right there with you....I'd be laughing my butt off too! Your sister sounds a lot like you.
I love, love your pretty Christmas tree and your wreath. It all looks dreamy and sweet and so you.

  3. Well, you got all the right stuff! Love the colors and your ornaments and all the shine! You even have serendipity going for you. Your wreath turned out to be sensational! Maybe I should go dig in my closets! ;0)

  4. Cindy- First off- I don't car HOW old or tatty that sweet little tree is-it is absolutely perfect-love the ribbon around the base, too. Gorgeous.
As to the story- my son and hubby were here and I read it aloud to them...and my hubby said -you can't make up stuff like that. I would have wet my pants laughing! lol xo Diana

  5. You're a girl after my own heart with your precious tree and pretty wreath. I'm just starting to see some of your fabulous home and I'm loving your Christmas style!

What a great story!! I would have died laughing and I know I wouldn't have been able to stop through the entire blessing. I guess that would have been the icing on the cake!

  6. Oh dear Cindy, your sister sounds like a hoot! You two must be a total scream to be around when you get together! I LOVE your little Christmas tree, she looks like something a sweet fairy would live in - have you checked to see if there is indeed one tucked inside a branch somewhere? Also, your wreath is just gorgeous, it looks so lovely against the pink front door! All of your Christmas decor is so sweet and pretty and so very Cindy!

  7. Love your pink and white. The wreath turned out really pretty too! Wouldn't you have loved to be a fly on the wall at your sister's?? Hilarious!

  8. Love that story!!!! I can't take good photos of glowing lit trees either. Your tree and front door always swoon me...the pink is just the perfect pink on your front door. I've added a bit of soft soft pink to my all white sitting room this year and love it mixed with the aqua. Merry merry xo

  9. hahahahaha. that is an awesome thanksgiving memory. i feel like most of us can relate. the holidays can be the worst of times for this very reason--families don't get along swimmingly always and there's so much pressure to act like shiny happy people. also, i don't think Jesus minds when we slur to him.

your tree is gorgeous. my favorite image is the rose above the mantel. you outdid yourself with that one.

  10. Hi Cindy,
Your Christmas décor is DREAMY, soft and shabby perfection! Love the tree and the loopy ribbon. The darling wreath on your front door is adorable your front door is the most perfect shade of pink!
    Your sister sounds like fun!!

  11. Your posts are always so fun. I love your Thanksgiving story. Your little tree is just gorgeous! I need a white tree. I always like to have my real tree but I want an old white tree like you have too :). I also love your wreath--how perfect it looks on your pink door. I've been decorating like a crazy woman--just posted my mantle. Have a good rest of your week ---

  12. aw you have inspired me yet again. i love your go with the flow and let it happen style of decorating (and thinking). its how you end up getting the most original and pretty looks I think. and you did it again! nice texting with you yesterday!! xo

  13. ps that was hilarious...about your sister. family relations are hard, but i have to give it to them both that the MIL stepped in and did the needful in the most proper way and seemed to be delighted to be the one to come to the rescue.

  14. lolol Too funny, Cindy! I can just imagine the look on her MIL's face!!! HA! I love your sweet little shabby tree, girl! So stinkin' cute! And don't even get me started on your gorgeous pink front door!!! LOVE it! Sending you holiday hugs!!

    xoxo laurie

  15. The Tree and Wreath are Beautiful and blend with the Harmony of your Lovely Home so well. Your little Story tickled me... I think we've all had those moment when whilst dealing with the unlovely people in our lives in the best Spirit possible, things go left anyways. *Winks* This will be a Thanksgiving Holiday Story I'm certain the kiddos will recall well into the future and make for humorous Stories in the retelling of it... to me, that is the type of Personal Story that makes Memories so poignant! I still recall a Humorous Holiday Blessing Memory... my Room-mate and I were both single at the time and had invited Friends for the Holidays, we also invited one of the Friends to lead the Blessing and she was rather long winded with it. So, when she then asks my Room-mate {who was always hilarious and by now was ravenous} to add to the Blessing, my Room-mate bows as if she was going to say something Spiritually Profound and simply says, "Good God lets eat!" I have never forgotten that hilarious Moment and the look on the other Gal's face... *LOL*

Merry Christmas from the Arizona Desert... Dawn... The Bohemian

  16. hahahaha Love the Thanksgiving story! Love you soft and romantic Christmas decorations too!

  17. I love this tree!! of course its perfect! I came here to comment and saw your ''painting of a Lily'' which looks uncannily just like a picture I took of the lilies I keep at home...which I try to have all the time...and this is the link for it if you want to see it, it is almost exact except for the placement of the unopened bud....but you must see it here:
    blessings, lady
